Histoire de l'artiste

I was taught to sew by my mother when I was about four years old. I had no sisters. My mother always sewed so I was always bothering her and probably trying to copy her. I remember making headbands on a bead loom, when I was about 11 years old I think. My brother I both did looming and his was better than mine so I was trying to do better beadwork than him. I just kept trying to beat him by doing better work.

I sewed for the family and just for the sake of sewing. I started selling when I was about 12 or 13 years old. I sold to a nun in the community who noticed some of us could sew so would ask us to make this or that.

Over the years, I’ve learned to do my own drawings for beading and embroidery. Sometimes I draw a flower I like and just go from there, trying the different colours. If it looks nice I will go with it, otherwise I take it back out. If I go too far, I just keep going and it always turns out nice. Drawing is like that, too. I just always keep adding. I make my own patterns with clothes and I really like the finished product. That is my joy.
