Histoire de l'artiste

I don’t think I can look at the world the way I did before I became a photographer. It changes you. No matter where I go, my eyes are always wide open and alert, receptive to the emotions and messages embedded in everything around me, from a heart-shaped rock on the ground to an angel-shaped cloud in the sky.  Everything has a story and everything has meaning.  I like to think that through my photography, I convey those stories, emotions, and messages.

For me, being a travel photographer is a double-edged sword. There is no on or off switch. It is incredibly invigorating when I am capturing the raw images to work with and later interpreting them into my own vision.  But once you have this in you, you’re always “on,” always noticing, always receiving. A “holiday” is no longer a time to turn off, unwind or shut down. I can’t shut things out; I can’t walk 15 feet without noticing the interesting shapes of shadows on the ground, or the two ravens “kissing” high atop a frozen lamppost!

I am both receiver and transmitter. I receive the messages, emotions, and stories, and after interpreting them (through the creative post-processing phase), I transmit my own version and vision of the message through my photographs. This is why I love photography; it is such a powerful, creative and emotive form of communication.

Biographie de l'artiste:

Tawna Brown was born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and is very proud of where she comes from. Her passion for traveling and photography is evident in her colorful and inspiring photos. Tawna is a self-taught freelance travel photographer and writer. She has an eye for things that the average person doesn't doesn't notice; she sees beauty everywhere.

Tawna’s photos tell a story; they transport you to places you’ve never been before, and places you’ve dreamed; they also bring you back somewhere familiar, to places close to your heart.

Tawna has traveled across the Northwest Territories and the world, camera in hand. In 2015-2016, she took a year off from her full-time job as a negotiator with the Government of the Northwest Territories and photographed her way around the world (twice), which you can read about here. In 2020, she has plans to take another year off and do something very similar!

You can see some of her "worldly" work and follow some of her travels on her blog at www.tawnabrown.com/blog; better yet, consider signing up to her (free) blog! All expenses paid virtual travel! What more could you ask for?

Tawna licenses her work to magazines, industry, government, NGOs, and environmental companies for various uses, including websites, publications, displays, and reports.

She sells many of her photographic works as fine art prints in various sizes and formats, including canvas, metal, photo board, banners (the largest she has printed was 90" wide!) She has recently been working on "painterly photographs," which involves digitally rendering the raw photograph/image into what appears to be a painting.

Tawna is also exploring consumer products that will feature her images, stay tuned!
