Julie Beaver
My name is Julie Beaver, and my journey into the world of art took an exciting turn last year when I learned how to make a trapper's hat from the skilled hands of D'Arcy Moses. Although I've only been creating art for about 10 years, my passion for preserving and reviving traditional wear runs deep within me.
What inspires me most is the desire to bring back traditional attire and reconnect with my cultural heritage. Growing up, I was always fascinated by the rich history and significance of our traditional wear, and now, as an artist, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to honor and preserve those traditions.
For me, working with various hides and furs is more than just a creative choice—it's a way of staying connected to the land and the environment that has always been a part of my upbringing. Each material carries with it a unique texture and story, adding depth and authenticity to my creations.
While my father once practiced the art of creating traditional wear, I am the only one in my immediate family who pursues art. However, rather than feeling alone in my craft, I see it as an opportunity to carry on the legacy and keep the tradition alive for future generations.
I love creating art in the comfort of my own home, surrounded by the familiar sights and sounds of my upbringing. Experimenting with different techniques and tanning my own hides brings me a sense of joy and fulfillment like nothing else.
The thing I love most about creating art is the freedom to experiment and explore new ideas. Tanning my own hides allows me to truly immerse myself in the process, connecting with the materials on a deeper level and infusing each piece with a part of myself.
Ultimately, art is more than just a creative outlet for me—it's a way of preserving my culture, honoring my ancestors, and forging a deeper connection to my heritage. With each stitch and every carefully crafted piece, I strive to breathe new life into age-old traditions, ensuring that they endure for generations to come.
