Martine was born in the bush in the Yukon area.  Her grandmother, (dad’s mother), showed her sewing and basket making with quill work. She also learned how to tan moose hide when she was about 12 or 13 years old. 

Martine liked to make her artwork unique. Sometimes she would try to see if she can make the same things using different kinds of material. What she saw inspired her, like flowers, birds and animals. Her designs for moccasins, uppers and birch bark baskets were her own and were very unique.
