Artist Story

I would define myself as an eclectic artist, moving between various mediums using natural materials. I particularly love to make small earrings with bright-coloured beads, etched caribou antlers, porcupine quills, fish bones and fur pom-poms. I also make pendants on chains, and occasionally I’ll make beaded bracelets, brooches, hair barrettes and bags.

I’ve always loved the outdoors, so it’s important for me to add natural elements in my work. When I’m fishing, hiking, or boating, I’m always looking for materials I could use for artwork.

I learned how to bead in Norman Wells, when I moved in 2013 for my first job after attending university. During my first week there, I went to the library and met four ladies quietly sewing at one of the circular tables. I ended up attending their beadwork class and learning a lot from them. The people of Norman Wells have been such an inspiration to me on this journey!

Brick stitch is the beading technique I use the most. I love working with geometric patterns and coming up with fun colour combinations.  Sewing is so versatile - the sky is the limit really! – and is also such a useful skill to have; I’ve repaired and made clothes based on my needs and have helped my friends in all sorts of ways.

I can imagine many designs in my head, but when it comes to the placement of beads, I plan a bit more. I’ve been drawing since I was a kid, so I just sketch out my ideas, trace them and figure out the colours as I go. I have many sketchbooks at home. I also draw for fun and I create CGI artwork.

There are many inspiring artists in my family, who mostly paint and draw. My mom was always into art, and my grandfather was a talented painter. My cousin and aunt are both art teachers. We’re all very creative!

Making artwork is an outlet for me. Sewing makes me feel very happy. When I see a completed project that I made from scratch, I feel overwhelmingly proud. My brain is constantly thinking of new ideas, and being able to bring them to life really calms me down. When my hands are busy, it allows me to pause and enjoy the moment.
