Artist Story

My name is Becky Lang, and I am a Métis artist and commercial fisherman based in Yellowknife. I create unique jewelry using otoliths, the inner ear bones of fish composed of calcium carbonate. These small “pearls” grow with the fish and are used by marine biologists to determine a fish’s age, much like tree rings reveal the age of a tree. I harvest all otoliths exclusively from the waters of Great Slave Lake and do not alter them in any way.

My journey into jewelry began with a single pair of earrings for myself, which grew into a collection of simple, elegant pieces set in sterling silver, gold, and hypoallergenic materials. I enjoy exploring creative possibilities and incorporating feedback from customers and others to refine my designs, sharing the natural beauty of Great Slave Lake with those who appreciate it.

My work is deeply connected to my Métis heritage. I was raised harvesting from the land—picking berries, hunting, and fishing—and I continue these traditions as an adult, striving to use as much of what I harvest as possible. The jewelry I create from the fish I eat reflects a full-circle process that celebrates life, heritage, and sustainability.

In addition to jewelry, I create Stained Wood Art, applying stain to rough wood panels to craft wall art featuring wildlife, people, and custom requests. My work reflects a thoughtful, sustainable approach, honoring both my heritage and the natural world.

Artist Bio

Becky Lang moved from Saskatchewan to Yellowknife in 2008. Her Métis ancestry deeply influences her life, guiding her practices as both a commercial fisherman and an artist. In 2017, Becky began creating jewelry from otoliths—the inner ear bones of fish—which she harvests from Great Slave Lake. Since then, her work has been showcased and sold at the Yellowknife Farmers Market alongside smoked fish, berries, and other harvested goods, as well as at local galleries including the Gallery of the Midnight Sun, the Down to Earth Gallery, the Cabin (Yellowknife airport) and Just Furs. In 2021, her art was exhibited for the first time at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre (NACC) and will be again in January 2026.

In addition to jewelry, Becky creates Stained Wood Art, applying stain to rough wood panels to craft wall art featuring a variety of subjects, including wildlife, people, and custom requests. Her work reflects a connection to heritage, the natural world, and a dedication to sustainable, thoughtful artistic practices.
