Margaret Quitte
Artist Story
I am a self-taught beading artist. I was introduced to beading as a young girl while doing a school project. At the time, I was too young to finish it quickly, so my mom helped me complete it. I later found my passion for beading in 2023, when seeing my partner's Auntie's creativity and artwork. She gifted me a pair of beaded earrings with birch bark that she harvested herself. I admire all of her work and talent.
I now enjoy making beaded and tufted earrings, hair clips, change purses, keychains, and much more; however, majority of my work includes beaded earrings. I am constantly inspired by the creativity of other artists. Seeing their artwork on social media makes me want to bead. I have found relaxation and enjoyment in the traditional art.
I have recently decided to start a business called "Northern Dene Beads" based in Hay River to assist other beaders in the South Slave Region as good quality supplies are hard to find. I hope to sell a variety of beading materials, supply kits, and expand to facilitate workshops to teach others the traditional artwork.
